Salaries fall in December

The travel recruitment market slowed down in December with pay for the average new travel job falling by 1.99 per cent, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment which surveyed all new vacancies registered with the companies during the month.

The average new role offered a salary of £24,628 last month, which is down by 2.23 per cent from last December and marks the lowest monthly figure since October 2016. There was an even bigger fall for standard travel wages (those paying below £40,000) with a 6.92 per cent monthly dip to stand at £21,805 which was also down by 3.53 per cent annually. However it was a strong month for executive roles (those paying above £40,000) with the average wage reaching £57,530 – their fourth highest total of the year.

Around the country, it was a mixed picture, with travel salaries increasing by 3.48 per cent in London and remaining steady in the south of the UK with just a 0.79 per cent fall to stand at £27,197, but falling by 4.46 per cent to £22,280 in the north of the UK. The northern dip follows two very strong months with growth of 4.34 per cent in October and 5.72 per cent in November.

Christmas hits travel activity

The distractions of the Christmas holiday season meant that December was once again the quietest month of the year for both new candidate registrations and vacancies. However, new vacancy numbers rose by 12 per cent from December 2016, while the number of new candidates fell by just two per cent – their first year-on-year monthly fall in 2017.

Speaking about the figures, Barbara Kolosinska, Director at C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment, said: “December is always the quietest month of the year for travel recruitment and, while last month was no exception, we still saw a very welcome jump in new jobs being made available compared to the previous December.

“2017 was an exceptionally busy year for C&M Travel Recruitment and the early figures from January suggest that this year will continue in much the same way – here’s hoping for an even busier 2018!”
