Home to one of the seven wonders of the world “Taj Mahal”, the city of Agra has been pitched forth by the conservationist to be granted the the heritage city status.
(TRAVPR.COM) INDIA - April 29th, 2013 - Conservationists in Agra have made fresh pleas for granting heritage status to Agra – already home to 3 major World Heritage Monuments. The Braj Mandal Heritage Conservation Society has taken this initiative to streamline civic amenities and enable other conservation endeavors for the sake of tourists and locals.
"A city so rich in culture and architecture, where every street has historical building needs to be recognized as a heritage city and the union ministry should draw up plans to remove encroachments around tourist sites," says conservationist Shravan Kumar Singh.
The Union Tourism Ministry has once dismissed the plea in 2007 when it told the Supreme Court that since Agra lacked basic amenities and needed time to improve its amenities, it could not be granted the heritage status.
"Yes, in the so-called modern Agra there is evidence of haphazard planning and irrational growth, but then those are not the heritage pieces one would like preserved," N.R. Smith, famous historian who has also documented Agra`s modern history through his columns.
Although international bodies such as UNESCO have pleaded support for these projects, Agra’s local bodies aren’t much interested in the revamp of the city. The lack of heritage consciousness is another key reason why tourism is still not the primary revenue generator, despite Agra being home to the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. "We have to begin by demarcating the areas as Mughal Agra, the British Agra and the Agra Development Authority`s Agra. Only then can one go ahead with conserving the real heritage of the city of the Taj Mahal. And those who think people and their work places need to be demolished to make way for modern malls or parking slots are only hurting the spirit of conservation," Smith added.
