Mount Kilimanjaro became a National park in 1973 and became a World heritage in 1987. Mount Kilimanjaro comprise three volcanoes which are Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, they were formed one million years ago. It has an area of 1668sq Km. It can be located between 2 degree 50’ and 3 degree 10’S , and between longitudes 37 degree 20’ and 37 degree 40’. The Headquarters is situated at the Marangu Gate at the Forest periphery.
The park has been divided into three major zones namely High use zone, Low use zone, and Wilderness zone. The High use zone includes Mweka, marangu and Machame routes. The Marangu route is easiest and most popular than Machame and Mweka. The Low use zone includes Londorosi, Umbwe, and Rongai routes as well as Kibo circuit. Whereas Londorosi is a two way-route, Umbwe and Rongai are ascending routes only, this area also includes an area of Shira plateau. The Wilderness zone it cover a largest area about 83% of the entire Park. It incorporates the Mountainous areas and all areas in the park that are not included in the other two zones. However, do not confuse with the Mount Kilimanjaro ecological climatic zones, experienced during your trekking from the mountain foohills to the summit with Snow, Uhuru peak. Kilimanjaro climatic zones are cultivation zone, forest zone, Heather, and Moorland zone, Alpine desert zone, and Arctic zone. Arctic zone, is the Kilimanjaro Snow peak.
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed in Dry season Months from June to December, except April and May. However January, February and September are considered the Best Months. Also, July, August, November and December are good months. During the rainy period of March to May, clouds tend to pile up and over the summit dropping snow on top and rain at the base. The shorter rain period of October to December often has Thunderstorms that pass over the Mountain, dropping rain as they go.
The climb is all adults of normal health and fitness should be able to make it to the top, without need specialist like First aid with several medicines, and oxygen bottle.
There is a possibility of seeing wildlife climbing Mount Kilimanjaro , as there is a lot of of it in the forest and moorlands including Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard, warthog, bush pig, water buck, bush buck, several species of monkey and a lot of different species of birds
On accommodation Moshi town where climbers stay before they climb and there a host of hotel lodges that cater for them. Also Arusha has lodges where climbers can stay before travelling to Moshi to climb on mountain itself. The different routes have their specific places to overnight and the accommodation ranges from well -appointed huts on the Marangu route to camp grounds where you pitch your own tent. Ways of of getting there through Air and Road. By Air you arrived Kilimanjaro International Airport; it’s about 45minutes from Moshi town. By road 45km from Moshi town and 86km from KIA (KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT) to Marangu where is Headquarters’ National Park is situated.
