Romance is in the air, but how much does the average UK citizen spend on their partners?

(TRAVPR.COM) UNITED KINGDOM - February 8th, 2013 - In 2012, retailers reported that sales for more practical items were up in the run-up to Valentine’s Day, with both men and women choosing to give each other items like household appliances and grooming products, as opposed to more frivolous gifts like jewellery, flowers or chocolate.

However, this does not necessarily mean that couples are feeling the pinch too much – it just indicates that they might be trying to squeeze more value out of what is an expensive occasion for couples. According to recent statistics, the average UK couple still spends nearly £1,351* on Valentine’s Day each year; easily enough for a short holiday!

It’s estimated that regular travellers take 2.5 romantic trips a year, so it makes sense for a lot of people to make good use of Valentine’s Day promotions in order to spend some time with their partner while enjoying a change of scenery. Amongst travelling couples, cities are usually the most popular type of destination, with 74% of romantics opting to go on a city break to enjoy fine dining and entertainment.

With many travel agents providing great deals on Valentine’s Day travel, it’s unsurprising that couples are tempted to take advantage of these offers. Some travel companies offer up to 25% off, meaning romantic types can whisk their significant other away somewhere traditional, such as Florence or Paris, or further afield where they can enjoy cheap living and shake off the winter blues in glorious sunshine.

However, as is the case with any trip, there are certain things that you cannot scrimp on. Travel insurance is probably even more crucial on a romantic holiday, as there is even more emphasis on everything being ‘just perfect’. Furthermore, with expensive gifts often being exchanged on such excursions, it’s particularly prudent to ensure that your belongings and plans are covered by a reliable policy, should the worst happen.

Nomadic lovers who enjoy year-round holidays would be wise to invest in annual travel insurance meaning that they can get holiday cover whatever the occasion. For cash-strapped couples, a one-off policy ensures that a Valentine’s rendez-vous doesn’t turn into a dangerous liaison!
