It is flocked by both foreigners and countrymen, every year. Although the Government of India, since 1974 has encouraged tourism but there were still some places, which were out of bound of the foreign tourists. But now they have been opened-up except for the nationals of Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Burma. As before, they will need to take the approval of the Union Home Ministry to visit these places.
The restricted areas that are now open for foreign tourists are La-Durbuk-Tangtse-Lukung-Spangmik-Man-Merak (Pangong Lake); Leh-Khardung-La- Khalsar-hunder-Turtuk-Pachathang Tyakshi (Nubra), Kargil- Khangral-Shaker-Chiktan-Leh; Leh-Upshi-Chumathang-Mahe-Loma Bend (Nyoma) and Dah-Garkone-Darchik-Batalik- Slimo-Kargil (Leh-Kargil) and Karu-Chang.
The home ministry approved a proposal about opening certain tourist regions in Ladakh for the foreign tourists. Foreigners in a group of two more people, sponsored by recognizing tour operators will be able to visit the Nubra valley, after taking permission from the District Magistrate of Kargil or Leh. The days of visiting will be limited to 7 days from the very day, the permit will be issued.
