(TRAVPR.COM) AUSTRALIA - March 9th, 2013 - Enjoy watching surfing or want to have some fun competing then head to Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast this Easter for the historic Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest from March 29-31 at Moffat Beach.
The event is in its 39th year and is the second longest running surfing contest in Australia behind the Bells Beach Pro in Victoria.
Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd Tourism Development Manager Anthony Johnston said the Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest was a part of surfing folklore.
Charles Ben (Pa) Bendall was regarded as the grandad of surfing in Queensland. He and his wife Marjorie (Ma) settled in Caloundra in the 1950s.
“Ma and Pa Bendall Park at Moffat Headland overlooks one of Caloundra’s best surfing beaches and recognises the couple’s contribution to surfing history on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Johnston said.
“This contest has grown into one of the most popular on the surfing calendar and is renowned for featuring some of the best emerging talent up against some seasoned campaigners.”
“Moffat Beach is also a great place to learn more about the local history along Caloundra’s Coastal Walk as it runs in both directions from here and showcases a number of points of interest along with some fantastic views.”
The Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest carries $11,000 in total prizemoney and is hosted by the Windansea Boardriders Club. Professional surfers including Joel Parkinson, Serena Brooke, and defending champion Wade Goodall have all enjoyed this event in the past.
