Thousands of sightseers and participants will race to Barcelona in March for the city’s annual marathon.
(TRAVPR.COM) SPAIN - March 11th, 2013 - Participants and spectators alike will be in Barcelona in March to experience the city’s 2013 marathon.
The Barcelona Marathon is a unique way to see and experience the old city built by the Roman Empire. As participants test their endurance on the 42.195 kilometre trek, they will wind through ancient streets that are now home to works by the famous architect, Gaudi.
Since its inception in 1978, the Barcelona Marathon has undergone several major changes. Originally, the race was not held in the heart of the city, but in the coastal town of Mataro instead. It was not until 2006 that the marathon was hosted within the city itself.
Runners will have to negotiate some inclines on the marathon course, although the majority of the circular run is flat. Temperatures can soar in Barcelona at this time of year, however, so there will be plenty of refreshment stations offering water, isotonic beverages, fruit, and sponges along the way, in line with IAAF and RFEA rules.
In addition to the race itself, there are other events taking place, including the Breakfast Run and Pasta Party the day prior to the main event. Marathon runners may participate and eat with one friend for free.
The Barcelona Marathon is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 17 March 2013. The race will begin at 8.30 a.m. in the Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina. There is a six-hour time limit from the start of the race. Seven pacemakers will take part in the run to help runners to gauge their progress.
Online registration for those who wish to participate in the Barcelona Marathon closes on 3 March 2013.
