A counterpart of the Hindu Holi festival, Goa’s Shigmo festival is scheduled to be held from 28th March, 2013 to 10th April, 2013. During the 14 day tenure, the festival will be celebrated at 14 different destinations in Goa.

(TRAVPR.COM) INDIA - March 13th, 2013 - A social get-together with a religious touch, Shigmo Festival is the Goan counterpart of the Holi festival celebrated in other parts of India. The Shigmo Festival  of Goa is scheduled to be held  from March 28, 2013 to April 10, 2013 at 14 different destinations in this tiny Indian state. Their names include Ponda, Pernem, Panjim, Mapusa, Vasco, Bicholim, Sanquelim, Valpoi, Curchorem, Sanguem, Margao, Quepem, Cuncolim and Canacona respectively.

Just like Carnival festival, the state tourism board is expecting huge tourist influx during the tenure of Shigmo festival. As per Nikhil Desai, director of Tourism, Goa, "Our strategy paid off. There was 90% occupancy during the four-day Carnival celebration earlier this month.” He said that  the government will spend around 1.5 to 2 crore in support of the Goa festival and the tourism department wants to showcase it as a spring festival and will reach out to the target group through the media and travel agents.

The major attraction of the Shigmo Festival is the huge procession which is attended by people from all sections of society with a lot of enthusiasm. It is a folk festival which displays a wide variety of folk dances& music and theatre forms. Besides, you’ll get to see a large variety of arts and crafts along with colorful floats based on mythological characters, musical events, masks, hats and jewelry. It is the festival of farewell  to winter and celebrated on the full moon day in the month of March (Phagun).
