(TRAVPR.COM) UNITED KINGDOM - May 13th, 2013 - The annual Mount Mulanje Porters Race, now in its seventeenth year, has attracted the attention of hundreds of participants over the years, both male and female and from all over the world. The participants athletically compete by running up and across the lovely plateaus of Mount Mulanje.
The race takes place on the small, rocky, hazardous paths of Mount Mulanje and is 25 kilometers in distance, which would take a real mountain climber twelve hours to cover, but the runners manage the race in less than three hours!
This year the race goes ahead as usual on Saturday 13th July. Entry for ladies is MK100, Porter MK200, Non-Porters MK400 and Non Malawians USD 200. By no means is this race for novices, but it is great fun. If you are over 16 and feel you have what it takes to complete the race, please email race2013@mountmulanje.org.mw or cal +265 (0) 1 466/506
The scale of this truly magnificent mountain has to be seen to be appreciated. Mulanje’s bare rock flanks tower to almost 10000ft (3000m), dwarfing all that surrounds it. It lies to the east of Blantyre and is easily accessible. Once on the mountain the vegetation changes with altitude and there’s plenty of wildlife from the klipspringer, a tiny antelope, to various other small mammals and, of course, a variety of birds. The latter include buzzard, the black eagle and countless white-necked ravens. As one of the many fantastic attractions in Malawi, the Porters Race is certainly one way to enjoy the scenery and wildlife Mount Mulanje has to offer!
