Instead of commuting in polluting vehicles in the stunning tourist destination, the vacationers can enjoy the mesmerizing beauty in the air-conditioned coaches. Some of the amazing scenic areas have been opened for the foreign tourists such as beautiful lakes close to Pangong Tso in March 2013. This region of Ladakh is opened for tourists from abroad.

Vacationers are quite excited after the Banihal-Baramullah railways. However, there are a few more reasons which will make your Ladakh tourism a lifetime experience, as the Indian Railways are planning to build lines in the Ladakh plains along the stunning Indus River. The proposed alignment could be from Batalik-Khalatse-Leh-Karu to Chushul.

This huge stretch would be around 500 kms is actually plain which comprises of populated and fertile regions. It is spread all over the road in Ladakh from Batalik to Chushul. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has recently inaugurated the 11 kms Qazigund-Banihal tunnel. For the travelers, this would be certainly a great news, as Kashmir Railway will be extended from Baramulla to Banihal. The tunnel has been constructed with a cost 1172 crore. The tunnel will be operational whole year unlike the Jawahar Road tunnel, which has to be closed for a few days due to heavy snowfall.

The new railway line will be a all-weather mode pf transportation for passengers as well as freight in the valley. 1400 HP diesel engine will run it along with a heating system for tension free service during the winters. There will be no connection between the Qazigund-Banihal section and Kashmir Valley. Government of India has understood the significance of all weather connectivity of rail to some of the isolated places. Besides a major requisite, this connection would be a economic mode of transportation. According to the reports, around 19565 crores will be granted for the 290 kms long railway line project.

On the brighter side, around one-third of this project has been completed which comprises of line frm banihal to baramullah. The rest of the part is very challenging, as it rtequites the greatest engineering challenges in the world and all over the great Pir Panjal Range.  Besides this, there are a few strategic projects in the pipeline, such as 500 kms long Srinagar-Kargil-Leh line.

The new project is surely an environment friendly as well as cleanest one and will be a greener mode of transportation for hundreds of military and civil vehicles.
