The Second Annual Hummingbird Festival comes to Sedona, Arizona. From workshops to garden tours to bird trips, this Festival is fast becoming an amazing annual event in Arizona.
(TRAVPR.COM) UNITED STATES - July 9th, 2013 - Take a trip to Sedona this August; Sedona is home to the Second Annual Hummingbird Festival hosted by the Hummingbird Society. With three days of presentations by the world’s foremost hummingbird experts and activities such as garden tours, exhibitors, bird trips and sunrise breakfasts, Sedona will be humming with birding excitement.
With an altitude of 4,500 feet, Sedona’s location and temperatures draw the highest and most diverse population of hummingbirds in Arizona. These tiny charismatic birds typically weigh between 2-20 grams and use their slender beaks to feed on nectar and insects. In anticipation of the festival, many local residents and businesses grow hummer-friendly flowers, heavy with blossoms or place fresh feeders full of sugar-water in their yards to encourage the migrant birds en route. Adult males are typically the easiest to spot with iridescent plumage that flashes in the sun and delicate pointed wings that always seem aflutter. Since hummingbirds utilize an enormous amount of energy flying, they must consume 1-2 times their body weight in nectar to provide adequate nutrition, making feeding an optimal location for viewing activity.
For the novice birder, a field guide for the area is essential to aid in identifying species as well as a good pair of binoculars to get up close and personal with these remarkable humming creatures. A journal or diary is also a must for keeping a written record of the birds you’ve spotted, making for a wonderful history of your interaction with the amazing birds and nature.
The beauty in observing any bird species is relishing and enjoying each moment a bird flits into your view. In between bird sightings, relax and harmonize with nature at the stunning El Portal Sedona Hotel. The luxury inn is centrally located, and offers guests personalized concierge services for the Sedona area. The staff will help you with everything “hummingbird” and Sedona! The area is full of breathtaking landscapes with its combinations of stark red rocks and desert blossoms; take jeep tour or a guided hike. The festival is August 2-4, 2013. The numerous feeders and flowers El Portal has set out encourages hummers and butterflies to the boutique hotel. Come observe the natural beauty of the hummingbirds as they gather on their migration route through the Arizona sun, converging for a moment for you to witness the charisma and charm of these tiny flitting birds.
