Quality wines in the Caribbean? Yes. Dominican and American investors are currently building an agricultural tourism project whose main attraction will be a first-rate vineyard that has already proven that it can deliver high quality wines.
With the support of winemakers from Chile and Spain, the vineyard currently produces two annual harvests. The innovative and new “Ocoa Bay” resort will also feature a tourism village with beautiful villas, a boutique hotel, clubhouse, restaurant, marina, shops, a church, spa, botanical gardens, racquet club, kids club, heliport, airstrip and many other services. Interested parties may purchase land lots or homes.
The resort is on 1.4 million meters of land and, after research carried out by winemakers in Chile and Spain, in 2010 launched an experimental vineyard on seven thousand square meters. So far, the vineyard has produced two annual harvests (June and December), and further experiments with red, white and pink wines have been very promising.
The innovative “Ocoa Bay” resort is the first agriculturally sustainable tourism project in the country, and the first of its kind in the country’s southwest region. The resort will also feature a tourism village with beautiful villas, a boutique hotel, clubhouse, restaurant, marina, shops, a church, spa, botanical gardens, conference rooms, racquet club, kids club, heliport, airstrip and many other services. Interested parties may purchase land lots or homes.
The project developer is the Gora Kardan Investment company, created in 2005, the year the experimental vineyard project was launched.
Here’s Where the Story Begins
The vineyard has returned to the place where the Spanish conquistadors founded the first sugar mills, and alongside them, the first vineyard in the Americas. It was from these lands that the grapes eventually made it to the mainland.
The varieties that have successfully adapted to the climate are the French Colombard, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Moscato Hamburg, Italy, Malvasia, Montepulciano, Alphonse Lavallée, Passerina, Syrah, Rebo, Cannonau di Sardegna, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Xarel.lo, Red Globe, Missions and Senso.
Ocoa Bay
The area is characterized by low rainfall and a high percentage of sunny days, overall pleasant weather conditions combined with comfortable breezes year round. The region is also known for its low humidity. The nearby Caribbean Sea is calm in this particular region, very suitable for such water sports as fishing, sailing, motor boats, snorkelling and diving, among others.
The region’s amazing clear skies are perfect for astronomical observation, and the closeness of the nearby sea and mountains are the perfect combination for many adventure sports (mountain hikes, paragliding , mountain biking, and others). Road access to nearby cities is an added plus.
