(TRAVPR.COM) USA - July 22nd, 2013 - Manchester, NH – The Currier Museum of Art will be honored by New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan for outstanding accomplishments in accessibility for people with disabilities in a ceremony on July 23 at 1 p.m. Five other organizations and individuals will share the spotlight at this event.

“The Currier is committed to providing opportunities for all to enjoy art, and that means designing experiences that are accessible to people with disabilities,” said Leah Fox, Director of Public Programs. “Whether you are visiting the Museum, our Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Zimmerman House, or taking a studio class at the Currier Art Center, accessibility is a responsibility shared across the institution.”

The process began in 2010 when the Museum created its Access Advisory Committee, which guided the organization through an institution-wide access audit and provided training for all staff and volunteers. The Museum recently worked with the NH Association for the Blind to launch a mobile tour of collection highlights that includes detailed visual descriptions and captions.

The Museum is fully wheelchair accessible and all wall text is designed in large print. Assistive listening systems are available for all tours and programs. Guided tours and studio programs at the Museum and Art Center are designed to accommodate varying needs.
