Attention Garlic Lovers! It’s time again for the Lautrec Pink Garlic Fair.

(TRAVPR.COM) FRANCE - July 29th, 2013 - This fair, held annually in August in the southern French town of Lautrec, marks the marketing time for pink garlic and provides tastings, competitions, and creative renditions of “garlic art”. It’s a unique experience with something for the whole family. Lautrec’s Pink Garlic Fair is held on the first Friday in August, which is Aug. 2 this year. It is an all-day event.

With the air tinged with the lovely aroma of garlic, colorful umbrellas everywhere providing shade to the hundreds of people that come yearly to the Pink Garlic mecca that is Lautrec. This event was created in the 1970s and at first was a simple affair with some of the same treats that are offered today.

Enjoy tasting extensive garlic recipes, including free samples of Lautrec’s famous Pink Garlic soup. The afternoon is filled with competitions including the ongoing garlic bunch competition where contestants try to create the longest bunch of garlic. The current winning length is just under 22 feet!

If you are not up for competition, that’s not a problem! There is a lot to learn about the cultivation of pink garlic versus other garlic varieties. It is said that pink variations are sweeter than traditional white or elephant garlic, which you can test for yourself by purchasing a dizzying amount of garlic products and local regional food items.

Throughout the day of the fair there are a host of regional products, food vendors, garlic sales, and even an open air dance and music celebration to take you into the evening. The traditions of this event remain largely the same year to year, however, each year the festival seems to grow.

Also in attendance will be the Brotherhood of the Pink Garlic of Lautrec. This brotherhood has nearly 120 members who are all bound to an oath promote the culinary deliciousness of Pink Garlic.

Each year, new members are received in, which is an interesting sight in itself as they are dressed in traditional long colorful robes and adorning intricate hats. The members of the brotherhood mingle throughout the fair and joyously participate with the crowd in festivities, tastings, and dancing.
