CATCH UP ON CALOUNDRA HOLIDAY FUN
Industry: Destinations

Anglers and their families can reel in a great holiday break and a share of $30,000 in prizes at one of Australia’s most diverse fishing-friendly destinations during August.

(TRAVPR.COM) AUSTRALIA - July 30th, 2013 - Anglers and their families can reel in a great holiday break and a share of $30,000 in prizes at one of Australia’s most diverse fishing-friendly destinations during August.

The Caloundra Power Boat Club on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast is the headquarters for the biennial Australian Anglers Association's National Angling Championships and Convention from August 6-22, 2013.

The championships consist of three rounds in estuary (Pumicestone Passage, Mooloolah River and Maroochy River), rock and beach (from southern side of Noosa River to southern tip of Bribie Island), and offshore (launching from Mooloolaba boat harbour and Caloundra Power Boat Club).

Individual and team championships will be awarded as well as overall champions for male, female, veteran male and veteran female (over 60 years of age) and junior (under 17 years).

Event organiser and national president of the Australian Anglers Association John Crone OAM expects up to 250 competitors from around Australia and New Zealand to attend the championships.

“Some of the best anglers in the country will be at the national championships and competitors and spectators will have the chance to appreciate some amazing fishing skills,” Mr Crone said.

“The timing and location of this year’s event has been specifically chosen because of the sunny winter weather and potential to deliver great catches. The last run of the bream will be on, along with the first of the whiting appearing. It is also the back end of the tailor season, while offshore there is usually plenty of good snapper and reef fishing.”

Mr Crone said another event not to be missed was the dry land casting at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club where entrants will use lead sinkers in an attempt to break the record of 209 metres.

The championships have been running since 1949 and the last time the Sunshine Coast hosted the event was at Caloundra in 1977. Entrants must be members of affiliated fishing clubs. Non-members can join a local club at the start of the championships.
