(TRAVPR.COM) UNITED KINGDOM - October 4th, 2013 - If you think ‘luxury private island’ coupled with one of Africa’s hottest upcoming destinations Malawi, you may think that the likes of only Royalty can afford such indulgence – but Blue Zebra, one of Malawi’s newest lodges offers just that, but at an affordable level.
Located in the Central Region of Malawi and just a 2 hour journey from Lilongwe, The Blue Zebra Island Lodge is situated in the Lake Malawi National Park on Nankoma Island, which forms part of the Marelli Island Archipelago, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site (whc.unesco.org). The three islands are home to a vast array of fresh water fish, including some of the most rare and colourful in the world. The islands also support a diverse range of flora and fauna and are a bird watchers paradise.
So why is a brand new lodge being built in what is a world heritage site? The simple answer is that Blue Zebra have been granted the concession to build with the view that they will play a pivotal role in maintaining and managing the conservation efforts in the area. The water close to the shore of the islands is home to a vast array of rare fish, belonging to the cichlids family. Better known as the tropical fish you find in tanks across the world, Lake Malawi is their natural habitat and it is vital that it is protected from poachers. Blue Zebra will patrol the waters, have already put into place anti-netting devices and will be providing food, accommodation and fuel to the parks own rangers as well.
Now complete, Blue Zebra has opened its doors to tourists seeking the unique combination of luxury accommodation, a serene, magical escape, a chance to get lost in true wilderness of Africa and the opportunity to see one of Malawi’s most precious resources: the cichlid fish of Lake Malawi. The lodge offers snorkelling, swimming, boating, wake boarding and scuba diving all in safe, clean waters, as well as the chance to explore the island on foot, catching glimpses off some of the most stunning birds in Africa. The lodge offers 8 exclusive tented en-suite chalets, each overlooking the lake, some even boasting their own private access to the shore. Twin rooms sharing a bathroom are also available for the more budget conscious guest. Accommodation ranges from $40 - $170 pppn (based on two sharing).
Blue Zebra is without doubt an un-missable destination on Malawi’s lake. For travellers looking for responsible luxury and the chance to unwind with the option of getting just a little adventurous as well, this spot is s true gem.
