CHARDHAM YATRA IN UTTARAKHAND WILL BEGIN IN APRIL 2014
Industry: Events

The Uttarakhand Government has decided to open the route of Chardham Yatra for pilgrims from April, 2014. Apart from Kedarnath, the other three destinations - Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri are fully opened for pilgrims.

(TRAVPR.COM) INDIA - January 20th, 2014 - Here’s good news for the enthusiasts of Char Dham Yatra. Except for the Kedarnath Shrine, the Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand which encompasses four prominent destinations- Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri- will be fully opened from April-May and continue till October. Last year, the trek to this popular pilgrimage was put on halt due to the last years devastating floods. But the present scenario affirms that the region is 75% complete, although not fully recovered.

Kedarnath, which was ravaged due to the flashflood in June, will not have a huge crowd of pilgrims. As per current scenario, a little more than 100 pilgrims per day will visit there. The Badrinath Shrine is well-connected to road till last year and one could visit Kedarnath either via chopper or by trekking from Gaurikund. Following the flood disaster in June, the route to Kedarnath has become quite long and tough. Now, one has to trek around 24 kilometers from Sonprayag to Kedarnath.

A pilgrim going to Kedarnath will have to give undertaking, besides obtaining a fitness certificate from the local authorities. Around 5000 people, which include a large chunk of pilgrims, were killed in the flashfloods. This led to the change of the topography of the Kedarnath Valley.

The floods were so destructive that the Uttarakhand government was forced to stop the pilgrimage en-route, just to resume it in October. “We will give biometric cards to pilgrims visiting Uttarakhand and keep records from the coming season. We feel there is no need to restrict the number of pilgrims visiting Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri. The Kedarnath route is not an easy one and therefore we will continue to restrict the numbers of visitors.” chief secretary Subhash Kumar.
