Sightseeing specialist Paris Pass surveyed nearly 250 customers from all over the world, all of whom visited the city in December 2013 and January 2014. An overwhelming 62 per cent said the French capital was the most romantic city they had ever visited. The most popular alternative cities were Venice and Rome, each named by five per cent of those surveyed, while nearly three per cent said London was their preferred romantic destination.
Asked to name their Paris romance hotspots, another clear winner emerged - the EiffelTower, named by 27 per cent of those who rated Paris their most romantic city. Other top spots were the Seine river (either walking alongside it, cruising on it, or simply viewing it) and the Pont des Artes bridge, where couples famously leave inscribed padlocks as love tokens. The Seine was named by 17 per cent of respondents, while the Pont des Artes was named by 10 per cent.
“Destinations can sometimes be hyped up only to disappoint on arrival, but it’s clear from our survey responses that this isn’t true of Paris - visitors still believe it’s the world’s capital city of romance,” says Amanda Truman, Director – Product Marketing for the ParisPass.
“Visiting the EiffelTower at night, taking a cruise on the Seine or strolling across the Pont des Artes are just the beginning. Even while sightseeing visitors to Paris will come acros several other really romantic spots.”
Ms Truman cited the Opera Garnier (inspiration and setting for the Phantom of the Opera), Paris’ most beautiful church Sainte Chapelle and the famous clock at the Musée d’Orsay as must-sees for anyone looking to enjoy romantic Paris to the full.
