Gone are the days when a backpackers hostel was just a grimy linen-free mattress on a metal bunk, as the new website from Bura Surfhouse backpackers hostel in Lagos, Portugal shows.
(TRAVPR.COM) PORTUGAL - April 10th, 2014 - To celebrate their one year anniversary, the guys at the Bura Surfhouse backpackers hostel in Lagos, Portugal, have launched their new website today – www.burasurfhouse.com and the stunning site showcases quite how far backpacker hostels have come since the days of old when backpackers' only form of travel was to hitch-hike and the idea of staying in a hostel was for down-and-outs and the unwashed.
After a stunning first year, with over 2,000 guests from over 50 countries, from Albania to Zimbabwe, the success of this hostel is down to the understanding that backpacking through Europe can be tiring - Endless cities, sights, ‘must-see checklists’, buses, trains, subways - sometimes backpackers simply need a holiday from backpacking!
Guilt-free relaxation is the order of the day at the Bura Surfhouse. Unlike many of the European capitals that most guests have travelled through prior to arriving into the far south western corner of Portugal, there are no world-famous sights to see or drain your wallet here. No galleries or museums. Guests can just devote their attentions to the hammocks by the swimming pool, €1 beers and cocktails on the sunset rooftop bar and arranged seafood BBQs all just a few minutes’ walk from what has recently been voted as the best beach in the world [i], and the centre of the town recently voted the best place in the world to take a holiday [ii]
The Bura ethos has been to create a home from home for travellers – the hostel is a typical Mediterranean villa – a large family home with a few tweaks to ensure convenience and security for both backpackers and surfers alike. The recurring review from guests has constantly been the homeliness of the hostel, the laid-back vibe and the friendly staff and by forcing themselves into the top 5 on Tripadvisor of Lagos’ specialty lodgings within months of opening the Bura guys are clearly doing something right.

The Bura Group was born in 2008 when two surfers / snowboarders from Devon, England - Matt Deasy and Jaden Whittaker - started Bura Snow Ltd (www.burasnow.com). They leased a small ski chalet in La Rosiere, France and although neither had any money, education or business experience, nor could they cook or speak French, they started operating catered ski / snowboard holidays for 20-40 year olds. Today, Bura Snow operates 4 properties in France, has over 60,000 unique website visitors annually and in 2013,the Bura Team, now with nearly 20 staff and a social media following of thousands, opened the Bura Surfhouse backpackers hostel and surf camp in the famous backpacker destination of Lagos, Portugal.
