ROYAL RESORTS PROTECTS SEA TURTLES IN CANCUN, MEXICO
Industry: Timeshare

Cancun based, Royal Resorts continues initiative to save endangered sea turtles.

(TRAVPR.COM) USA - August 6th, 2014 - During the summer season sea turtles emerge from the waves, returning to lay their eggs on the white sand beaches of Cancún and the Riviera Maya. Throughout the summer and into the fall, the dedicated Royal Resorts security staff patrol the beaches nightly on the lookout for more nesting turtles in an effort to protect them and transfer baby sea turtles to safety.

Grand Residences, a Leading Hotel of the World,, is the newest addition to the Royal Resorts portfolio and is ideally situated between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, within a half hour from the Cancun International Airport. This tranquil enclave is protected by a coral reef, where green sea turtles dwell and is participating in the turtle protection campaign for the first time. There is a National Marine Park located in the front yard and a nature reserve in the backyard. A beach stroll takes you to Puerto Morelos, the Riviera Maya’s last quaint fishing village and the inspiration for Jimmy Buffet’s song about laid-back Margaritaville.

Sea turtles are considered and endangered species in the U.S. and Mexico. Despite federal and state protection, fishermen kill large numbers, and some die following the entanglement in discarded fishing gear or from ingesting plastics and other debris. In many cases nesting is hindered or disrupted by coastal development and other human activities. After hatching at night, baby sea turtles find their way to the ocean by following the brightest horizon. Confused, many head towards the artificial lights of houses, hotels, or other structures and die before they reach the water.

In an effort to prevent this, the security staff at Royal Resorts transfers the sea turtle eggs to their purpose built corrals to protect them from human activity or costal development. Once the eggs hatch, guests have the opportunity to watch and participate in setting the tiny turtle hatchings free.

On June 25, 2013 Grand Residences welcomed its first turtle of the season. The green turtle eggs were transferred to the new corral and the nest was labeled with the date, time, species, size and number of eggs. The Grand Residences corral is the first such enclosure on the beach and will protect the eggs from predators such as crabs, birds, raccoons and dogs, and from the waves.

“  vvvvResort guests are delighted to be involved in this initiative as part of their vacation experience, they help security guards keep watch and they play an important role in their survival.” Says Carlo Bicaci, Grand Residences General Manager.

In addition guests can also purchase sea turtle souvenirs from which a percentage of the sales proceeds is donated to Royal Resorts Foundation’s conservation causes.
