Palace on Wheels is the only luxury train that has been giving its service since 1982 and has completed its 35 years.

The name “Palace on Wheels” was derived from its royal back-ground of the coaches. A new meter gauge air conditioned Palace-on-wheels was introduced in 1990.

In the past 20 years of operations, the “Palace-on-Wheels has been rated as one of the best ten luxurious rail journeys in the world. The coaches of this train were not being used by the Indian Railways after independence in normal passenger trains on account of very rich and traditional interiors.

Palace on Wheels provides spa which was introduced last year and also has an exclusive bar. Every coach is provided with a lounge where the guest can interact with each other and can also relax. If anyone is interested in smoking then there is a designated smoking area. Each saloon has two attendants who look after a maximum of eight guests.

Every year renovation of the train is done in which all the curtains, carpets as well as interior accessories are changed. This year furniture will also be changed of this luxury train and the expense of refurbishment will be in tune of $8,50,000.

Till now in all the luxury trains that operate in India, Palace-on-wheels is the only luxury train which take their guests to Jaisalmer. All kind of rides such as elephant ride, horse ride, camel ride and many more attractions are provided to the guests and royal treatments are given throughout the journey. They also have their own catering and house-keeping. They have proper health check-ups for their guests while they are on journey and in case of any emergency need the doctors are provided on call at the very next station.

Proper security measures are also taken for the guests that are travelling in the luxury train. A team of eight security guards have been hired from the Railway Security Welfare (RSW) who travels with them 24*7. Also proper security lockers are provided to the guest so that their personal belongings are kept safe.
