August sees fall in job vacancies
The travel recruitment market took a break in August with the number of new vacancies falling to its lowest level this year. Traditionally one of the slowest months of the year for the sector, August 2014 was even quieter than normal, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and Chisholm & Moore Executive Recruitment, which surveyed all new travel jobs registered at the companies in the month.
It was also a slow period in terms of candidate registrations with the fewest number of new applicants since April.
“The combination of summer holidays and the late Bank Holiday weekend means that August is always one of our quietest months of the year, but last month was particularly slow,” said Barbara Kolosinska, sales director at C&M Travel Recruitment and Chisholm & Moore Executive Recruitment.
“The number of new travel job vacancies and candidates both fell sharply compared to the previous month, however September appears to be much stronger signalling the start of the busier autumn season.”
Standard travel salaries fall again
The average salary for a new travel job dipped by 1.75 per cent in August to reach £24,203 which was also down by 2.36 per cent compared to the same month in 2013. The fall follows a 2.64 per cent decrease in July meaning that average salaries have fallen by over £1,000 in the past two months.
Salaries for standard travel roles (those up to £40,000) also fell in August and July (by 3.13 per cent and 3.28 per cent, respectively) leading to the decrease in the overall figure.
“August’s fall in salaries is disappointing and comes as a result of a decrease in pay for both new standard travel jobs and executive roles,” said Ms Kolosinska. “However, salaries have simply fallen back to the levels we saw earlier this year and remain above April’s total.
“For experienced candidates, the travel jobs market remains full of opportunities with the overall lack of quality applicants meaning that some companies are now willing to negotiate on their initial salary offers to secure the right employee.”
