Dominican Winter League Baseball is now offered as a tour from Punta Cana

(TRAVPR.COM) DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - October 14th, 2014 -

Winter League Baseball Season in the Dominican Republic is about to begin, and visitors to Punta Cana will now have the opportunity to see future and former Major League Baseball stars at a Winter League game.

The Dominican Republic has produced some of the best baseball players in the world, making up the largest percentage of international players in the Major League Baseball roster. Superstar players David Ortiz, Jose Reyes, Albert Pujols, Sammy Sosa and Robinson Canó, all hail from the Dominican Republic, and 30 Major League Baseball teams currently have training academies on the island, potentially training the next great star.  Baseball talent has become a great source of national pride for Dominicans, and the Winter League Baseball games are a great opportunity for fans to come out and cheer on their favorite teams and players.

As baseball season begins to wind down in the US, it is just about to get started in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Winter Baseball League season runs from late October through late January,  ending with the national playoffs to determine who will go to the Caribbean Series in February. The league consists of six national teams, made up of both new talent and major league players who join the league to keep their game sharp.

The Winter League Baseball excursion from Punta Cana will give travelers the opportunity to visit one of the two closest stadiums in the eastern half of the Dominican Republic. The first choice is the Francesco Micheli Baseball Stadium in La Romana, home to the Toros Del Este. The Toros have won four national championships and boast a large loyal following. The Toros have also produced Major League players such as Samuel Deduno, Antonio Alfonseca, and Fernando Abad.

Travelers could also visit the Tetelo Vargas Stadium in San Pedro de Marcorís, the home of the Estrellas Orientales. The Estrellas Orientales are one of the originals teams, founded in 1919,  boasting not only a legacy of fans, but for producing some of the Dominican Republic baseball legends. San Pedro is considered the Dominican Republic’s mecca for baseball, churning out players like Jose Offerman, Tony Fernandez, Sammy Sosa, Robinson Canó, George Bell and Alfonso Soriano.

The Dominican Republic’s rich tradition and passion for baseball is as much a cultural staple as rice and beans, and this new Punta Cana excursion is a great way for visitors to take in some authentic Dominican culture.
