Large dip for travel salaries

A mixed month for the travel recruitment sector saw salaries for new travel jobs fall by 3.84 per cent to reach an average of £24,668, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment, which looked at all new roles registered at the companies during the month.

This was the steepest monthly fall that the index has seen since May 2013, however average salaries still remain 0.33 per cent up compared to 12 months ago.

The monthly dip was largely a result of a weak February for new standard travel roles (those offering salaries under £40,000) with pay falling by an average of 5.36 per cent to £19,512. Although salaries fell across the country, there was a particular dip in the wages of new roles in the south of England compared to those in the north.

In contrast, salaries for executive travel roles (those paying £40,000 and above) saw a healthy increase in February 2015 compared to both the previous month and the previous year.

Speaking about the figures, Barbara Kolosinska, Director at C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment, said: “February was a disappointing month for travel salaries with the south seeing a significant dip in average pay. However, wages for newly advertised travel jobs remain higher than this time last year. The month also saw many bright spots – most notably the increase in pay for executive roles, which has increased substantially since the beginning of 2014.”

Many new candidates searching for roles

On a far more positive note, candidate availability increased once again in the travel industry with the month seeing a strong increase in registrations. The number of people looking for new travel jobs in February reached its highest level since last October and has now consistently risen year-on-year for each of the past six months.

“It’s great to see an increase in candidate registrations as this is a strong indication of the health of the whole travel industry,” said Ms Kolosinska. “This is typically a sign that employees are more confident about both the health of the economy and their own job security, and now feel comfortable enough to look at other opportunities to further their career.”

All figures are drawn from the salaries of the month’s new vacancies advertised with C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment.
