KAMCHATKA EXPEDITION TO EXPLORE PLANET’S MOST ACTIVE VOLCANOES
Industry: Adventure

A Secret Compass expedition team aims to explore one of the planet’s most active volcanoes this August on Siberia’s dramatic Kamchatka peninsula: Klyuchevskaya Sopka at 4,750m.

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - April 14th, 2015 - A Secret Compass expedition team aims to explore one of the planet’s most active volcanoes this August on Siberia’s dramatic Kamchatka peninsula: Klyuchevskaya Sopka at 4,750m.

The Siberian Times describes Klyuchevskaya as ‘one of the planet’s most active volcanoes’, and the Kamchatka Volcano Eruptions Reaction Team recently reported that, “The volcano has ejected cinders to the altitude of 6,000m above sea level.”

Located in eastern Siberia, Kamchatka is a little-visited and pristine wilderness area, home to many active volcanoes and plethoric wildlife. In describing the region’s bear population – one of the highest densities in the world – Wildlife Extra says they are “as ubiquitous as pigeons in Venice.”

Tom Bodkin, director of Secret Compass, said, “Though synonymous with coldness and inclement weather, Siberian summers are actually spectacular and make the perfect backdrop for wild camping, extreme paddling, cold-water surfing and as the above reports testify: volcano watching!

“With its persistent volcanic activity, our team of up to 12 adventurers seeks to appreciate this dramatic region at close range and from far above thus our high-altitude, low-impact expedition.”

Speaking to The Siberian Times recently, the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences added, 'Klyuchevskaya’s crater is filling up with fresh lava and the volcano's activity is steadily growing. There’s a constant volcanic trembling and glow above the crater'.

Kamchatka expedition highlights

·       Explore several active volcanoes including Eurasia’s highest

·       Experience one of the world’s highest densities of brown bears (est. 10,000)

·       Uncover a wildlife haven with almost 12% of the region’s 472,000 km2 protected

·       Discover bear-pocked grasslands, steaming lava fields and snowy summits

·       17 Aug – 6 Sept 2015 (22 nights), £2,899 all inc. except international flights

Kerry O’Neill, marketing director at Secret Compass, said, “Kamchatka’s visitor numbers are currently in four-figures. Its American counterpart, Alaska, receives upwards of two million annual visitors, and it’s rumoured that Kamchatka aims to attract half this figure which will ironically alter the landscape and remoteness that people come to experience.”

Bodkin concluded, “We’re keen to lead our second, low-impact expedition – which requires nothing more than tents and a strong team to carry its own kit and food – into this pristine wilderness, ahead of the development of tourist infrastructure and ski resorts promised following Russia’s Sochi Winter Olympics.”

Secret Compass was founded by Levison Wood (Walking the Nile) and Tom Bodkin, former  colleagues in the British Army’s Parachute Regiment. With its military background, Secret Compass offers exploration and adventure in wild, inaccessible and often post-conflict areas.

2015 expedition destinations from Secret Compass include Iran, Burma, Namibia, Ethiopia, Sinai, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan, with Kurdistan and Panama’s Darien Gap already scheduled in for 2016.

Secret Compass welcomes applications for its professionally led and self-supported Kamchatka expedition team from anyone with an active lifestyle and positive mental attitude. For further information contact Kerry O’Neill or visit the Kamchatka expedition page at secretcompass.com.
