Candidates see more choice in April

With more new travel jobs being made available than at almost any point for the last eight years, April was a positive month for candidates. In fact, the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment, which looked at all new roles registered at the companies during the month, found that April saw the second highest number of new positions since March 2007, and was beaten only by January 2015.

The overall figure was boosted by the strong rise in availability of new executive travel jobs (those paying a salary of £40,000 or above), as well as those in the South East and North of England.

Barbara Kolosinska, Director at C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment, said: “April saw more new travel jobs being made available than almost another month in the past decade, so it was clearly a great few weeks for candidates! Particularly in the South East, job seekers now have a much wider choice of roles available to them, and we expect this to result in more people returning to the jobs market in the next few months to explore their options.”

Little movement for travel salaries

Average travel salaries continued their recent trend by remaining relatively static in April with a dip of just 0.21 per cent. However, overall pay has risen annually by 3.82 per cent, while wages for standard travel roles (those with salaries below £40,000) have jumped in the past year by a huge 6.01 per cent.

“Despite an increase in the number of new roles, there was no sign of a rise in average travel salaries this month with pay remaining largely static,” said Ms Kolosinska.

“We shouldn’t ignore the impact of the recent general election, which always have a knock-on effect on the recruitment industry. The uncertainty that they create, particularly this year with the prospect of another coalition government, mean that many job seekers simply choose to stick with their current role and delay their job search until after the election. However, the stability of a majority government is welcome and should help both the recruitment and travel industries, for at least the short-term.”
