Historic transatlantic rowboat anchors at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina this weekend
Charleston, South Carolina – New York City oarsman, Victor Mooney and his twenty-four foot ocean rowboat, the Spirit of Malabo, will mark the 4th of July celebration weekend at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina.
Mr. Mooney recently rowed across the Atlantic Ocean from the coast of Africa, which took four attempts in a ten year period. After the holiday weekend, Mr. Mooney will head towards the finish line - New York's Brooklyn Bridge.
The five-thousand mile plus transatlantic row is in memory of all those that died of AIDS, including Mr. Mooney's brother and to encourage voluntary HIV testing. Mr. Mooney has faced many challenges from a eighty pound weight loss, shark attack, sleep deprivation and a piracy attack, but he never gave up.
“I hope in my life time, we will find a cure for for AIDS. Until then, HIV testing should be encourage to slow down this epidemic", said Mr. Mooney. In a audience with Pope John Paul II, the Pontiff blessed the oarsman at the Vatican for his mission.
