The Aurora Zone

The Aurora Zone has launched its new brochure, with an exclusive array of Northern Lights holidays, and simply amazing photography.

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - November 17th, 2015 - From active and adventurous, to cultural and multi-destination , all trips are expertly crafted to maximise the opportunity to witness Mother Nature’s greatest show, with a wide range of expert-led Aurora experiences, while offering a fascinating insight into the local traditions and heritage of Norway, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Greenland and Canada.

Here is a selection of The Aurora Zone's brightest highlights for the coming season:

NORWAYNorway is back, as you’ve never seen it before.  Making a return appearance to The Aurora Zone’s programme, Norway’s new trips take you away from the city of Tromsø to remote and untouched corners of the country, where light pollution is minimal. Visit Sortland, a coastal gem offering exceptional encounters with wildlife, spectacular scenery and the chance to search for the Aurora onboard a boat, to go on a moose safari in tranquil Lyngenfjord, or to visit Alta, where the Northern Lights can be seen up to 200 nights a year, plus more.

Sample trip: four-night Northern Lights on the Norwegian Coast (p79 in brochure) costs from £1,625 pp*

ACCOMMODATION go glamping under the Northern Lights in NEW Aurora Domes. Set on the edge of Lake Torassieppi in Finnish Lapland, these completely insulated, igloo-shaped tents have one transparent wall and face northwards for prime views of the unpolluted skies. Decorated with a husky or reindeer theme, there is a double bed, space for two extra beds, and a wood burning stove.

Sample trip: seven-night Lakeside Auroras (p43) costs from £1,930 pp (including Dome supplement)*

Situated in micro-Muotka, deep in the Taiga Forest in Northeast Finland, the NEW Aurora Kotas (on track to open at the end of Nov) are teepee-shaped cabins with a sloping partially-glass roof. These cosy constructions are self-contained and come with an en-suite shower room.

Sample trip: Four-night Muotka - Fellside Auroras (p25) from £1,490 pp (including Aurora Kota Supplement)*

CULTURE/HERITAGE – immerse yourself in Sámi culture in Menesjärvi in the heart of Finland, a traditional reindeer herding community steeped in centuries-old traditions. Accompany a reindeer herder for a morning, snowmobile across a frozen lake and go ice-fishing, drive your own team of huskies across the Arctic landscape, set out on snowshoe Aurora hunts, and take part in an Aurora workshop to learn the science of the Northern Lights and to hear ancient Finnish myths and legends about this spectacular natural phenomenon.

Sample trip: four-night Menesjarvi - Wilderness Auroras (p51) from £1,375 pp*

ADVENTURE - covering approximately 186,000 square miles, and home to 250,000 migratory caribou, 6,000 grizzly bears, 70,000 moose, 10,000 black bears and a human population of just 35,000, Canada’s Yukon is wilderness at its best, about where it is said ‘north is not just a place, but a state of mind’. The vast swathes of untouched landscape provide optimal conditions for Aurora hunting. Go husky sledding and snowmobiling across frozen lakes and rivers, travel on the Dempster Highway, accessible in the winter via an ‘ice road’ formed by the frozen Mackenzie River, and explore the Tombstone National Park, teeming with wildlife.

Sample trip: seven-night Northern Lights in the Yukon (p109) costs from £1,795 pp*

ADVENTURE – with its frozen rivers, colossal icebergs and inland ice cap, approximately 14 times the size of England, with layers of ice up to 250,000 years old, Greenland is an incredible destination in which to seek out the Northern Lights. Based in Kangerlussuaq, head out at night with a guide to watch for Arctic Aurora theatrics, and by day, take a five-seater plane ride at low altitude over the ice cap, search for wild reindeer and musk oxen, and go on a two-hour Greenlandic husky safari.

Sample trip: four-night Greenland - Ice Cap Auroras (p107) from £1,695 pp*

ACTIVITY – if you’re looking for active challenges and brilliant Aurora potential combined, look no further than Sweden’s Abisko, surrounded by jagged mountain peaks and close to the Abisko National Park. Ice-climb up a frozen waterfall, take charge of a team of huskies and a sled, snowmobile across frozen lakes and wild mountain trails, set off on a snowshoe trek, and learn how to capture amazing images of the Aurora. Share your enthusiasm for adrenalin-busting with your hosts, Dick and Mina, owners of the Abisko Mountain Lodge, and outdoors addicts themselves. Finish with a night at the famous ICEHOTEL® in Kiruna.

Sample trip: four-night Aurora & ICEHOTEL - activities in Abisko (p59) costs from £1,745 pp*

ACTIVITY - meet the Aurora Addicts, a family of six – Aurora (12), Oceanna (10), Lyrica (5), Caspian (3), and parents Chris and Becki - who have been chasing the Northern Lights for the last seven years. Adding unique insight to your Northern Lights experience, the Aurora Addicts will oversee this special trip on the Northern Norwegian coast. As well as Aurora hunts, a husky safari and a visit to a reindeer farm, you’ll board a spacecraft simulator at the Andøya Space Centre, which launches several rockets every year for atmospheric analysis, and meet the Centre’s three permanently-based Northern Light scientists to learn about the latest Aurora research.

-        Sample trip: four-night Adventure with the Aurora Addicts (p81) costs from £1,615 pp*

MULTI-DESTINATION – a triple Lapland bonanza incorporating the best of Sweden, Finland and Norway. In addition to Aurora hunts with local guides, scenic overland journeys from one country to another, and the chance to spend time with Sámi communities, there is the ICEHOTEL® to be experienced in Sweden, a 2.5 hour husky safari (an overnight husky safari is an option) in Finland, a Northern Lights Dinner cruise and three-hour snowmobile safari in Norway; enjoy fjord-side apartment accommodation and high-quality hotels.

Sample trip: eight-night Three Country Grand Aurora Tour (p101) costs from £2,875 pp*
