Strong month for standard salaries

Job seekers searching for new standard travel roles (those paying up to £40,000) in October saw wages rise to their highest point in nearly three years, according to stats from the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment which surveyed all new vacancies at the consultancies in the month.

With an average of £21,819, pay for the typical travel job increased by 4.61 per cent in the month to reach its highest level since February 2013. Notably, this was also the second month in a row to see a double digit annual rise in wages for new standard travel positions.

Overall, new travel jobs paid an average of £24,819 in October, which was up 0.50 per cent or £124 from September, with the figure continuing to be dragged down by the lack of executive roles (those paying £40,000 and above).

“The increases that we’re seeing in standard travel wages should be welcomed by the whole industry,” said Barbara Kolosinska, Director at C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment. “Salaries for typical travel jobs - which we class as ones that pay up to £40,000 - have now risen in five of the last six months. These roles include everything from entry level positions all the way up to middle management, so wages are now rising across the vast majority of the industry.

“Unfortunately, there continues to be a lack of higher-salaried senior and executive roles, although the early indications from November suggest this is beginning to change.”

Dip in new travel vacancies

After the three and a half year high in September, last month saw a dip in the number of new candidates searching for travel jobs, while there was also a small fall in the number of new roles being made available.

Ms Kolosinska added: “The number of new travel jobs being created and the amount of new candidates looking for these roles both fell in October, but they remain well ahead of the average for the past year.”
