• Average travel salaries fall for first time in six months, but still rise annually
• Southern wages remain strong, but Northern salaries dip
• Vacancy numbers increase strongly

Good news for job seekers

Travel job seekers were handed very positive news in February as many companies in the industry created new roles, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment which surveyed the month’s new vacancies.

The double figure monthly rise means that the number of new jobs increased both month-on-month and year-on-year for the first time since last June. There was also a monthly increase in the number of candidates searching for new roles, although the figure was down annually.

“Candidates looking for new travel jobs had reason to cheer last month as many companies in the industry created new roles up and down the country,” said Barbara Kolosinska, Director at C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment.

“And, despite February seeing candidate numbers rise for the second month in a row, the relative lack of applicants in the market means there is also less competition for job seekers than there has been recently, so there are plenty of job opportunities waiting to be grabbed by the right applicants.”

Salaries fall for first time in six months

After a very strong end to 2015 and start to 2016 which saw average travel salaries increase for six consecutive months, wages have now finally fallen. The typical travel role came with a salary of £25,628 in February which was down by 4.16 per cent from January, however this was still up by 3.89 per cent annually with salaries having risen year-on-year in 19 of the last 22 months.

The overall dip is mainly due to a fall in Northern salaries, which dipped back to their lowest level since March 2014 after hitting their highest point in 20 months in January 2016. Conversely, wages in the South remain very strong and are only marginally down (minus £185) from January’s 32-month high.

“February saw some relatively significant wage falls, but this follows six consecutive months of increases,” said Ms Kolosinska.

“Salaries have only actually fallen back to the levels of last November and remain particularly strong in the south, with areas in and around London leading the way.”
