(TRAVPR.COM) ICELAND - July 19th, 2016 - Dive Silfra offers visitors to Iceland the once in a lifetime opportunity of seeing the underwater world between two tectonic plates, otherwise known as Silfra Fissure. You may not at first imagine that you could experience Iceland by diving, but in fact Silfra Iceland is one of the most spectacular natural landscapes the country has to offer. Snorkeling and scuba diving in Iceland are two activities that are sure to make a lasting impact, something you’ll remember for years to come.
The Silfra Fissure is located inside Thingvellir National Park, just under an hour’s drive away from Reykjavík. It was formed thousands of years ago by the massive shifts in the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The fissure reaches a depth of more than 60 meters and is comprised of three main sections, known as Silfra Lagoon, Silfra Cathedral, and Silfra Hall. The water is crystal clear, having been filtered slowly through subterranean lava fields, making for extraordinary visibility for divers. The geology is stunning, with craggy rocks covered in moss and algae and diving among them has been described as like flying above a huge canyon.
Such a unique adventure requires preparation and knowledge about the inherent risks involved. To that end, Dive Silfra follows a detailed protocol for all trips to the fissure and has in place a contingency plan to account for any kind of emergency situation that may arise, from weather hazards to equipment failure to injury. All diving guides are required to meet criteria set by the Icelandic Maritime Administration and must be a certified PADI Dive Master, as well as having Emergency First Responder training. For scuba diving trips such as Deep Into the Blue, two guides are responsible for the safety of the group, with one leading the dive and managing the pace and the other following behind and observing that no one lags behind. The leader will be prepared to make crucial decisions if necessary.
It is essential for the safety of the tour group that participants understand the level of challenge they are embarking on when diving into Silfra Fissure. Dive Silfra ensures that participants have the knowledge of the risk so they can make an informed choice. Diving guides follow a strict agenda that involves briefing participants on important safety guidelines, explaining the plan for the day, demonstrating and checking all diving gear and equipment, and guiding the group with attention to the pace and general atmosphere. Should a situation arise, either of a minor or severe nature, guides are trained and ready to deal with it appropriately, involving outside resources such as ICE-SAR or Police if necessary. Dive Silfra’s mission is to provide visitors with an extraordinary experience under safe and comfortable circumstances.
