(TRAVPR.COM) UK - August 12th, 2016 - Central African Wilderness Safaris, local tour operator specialising in Malawian safaris, and operator of some of the best Malawi accommodation around the country, has given us an insight into the wonderful wildlife in Nyika National Park and how guests at Chelinda Camp and Lodge are being treated some wonderful sightings in this unique and stunningly beautiful location.

Nyika in a Nutshell

We’re seeing some beautifully mild days on the Nyika – one could almost have forgotten that it’s nearly mid-winter, but then, starting with a gentle breeze of of the north east, the wind starts picking up, gently at first until it becomes, at times, nearly gale force. Walking in the pine forests with a strong haunting wind blowing through the trees is an interesting experience, which we are at present encouraging our guests to try out.

Last week the servals and side-striped jackals were out in full force, with good sightings reported daily. Hyenas were also spotted frequently on the airstrip and an adult martial eagle made a pine tree near the TNM tower his home for three days. White backed and lappet faced vultures were seen circling near Chosi viewpoint on a day drive but there was no evidence of a kill. The antelopes and other herbivore species of the plateau start down to the lower forested slopes during the cold winter months for warmth and food and they now seem to have found refuge in the pine forests above the camp. Roan and eland antelope herds can be seen within 30 meters of the camp chalets whilst bushbucks have been spotted quite happily moving in close proximity to the buildings and staff.

Exceptional leopard sightings for Chelinda Camp and Lodge guests

This month, Chelinda Camp and Lodge guests were able to enjoy several exceptional leopard sightings. In mid-July, guests had the opportunity of watching a leopard relaxing on the far side of dam 1. The next day, a large male leopard was spotted moving past the stables complex and guests were also fortunate enough to watch an adult female leopard for 15 minutes as she walked along the road near the TNM tower. As the sightings continue to occur, the Central African Wilderness Safaris team is embarking on an ongoing initiative to track and monitor the leopards that inhabit the park more closely.
