This initiative allows them to become an active collaborator with UNICEF and their programmes to defend and protect children’s rights
(TRAVPR.COM) SPAIN - October 27th, 2016 - Kempinski Hotel Bahia Estepona and Unicef’s Spanish Committee have signed an agreement to confirm that this Costa del Sol hotel will adhere to the “Hotel Friends of UNICEF” programme with the objective to promote the respect for children’s rights around the world through tourism.
Through responsible tourism, the Kempinski Hotel Bahia Estepona will fundraise for UNICEF’s project to protect children’s rights in the Dominican Republic. In particular, the hotel is joining the fight against children’s sexual exploitation which is rife in this country, allowing it to become a communication platform to mobilise both clients and employees to promote children’s rights.
During the signing of this agreement, Kempinski Hotel Bahia Estepona’s General Manager Carla Lopes expressed the company’s commitment to promoting this collaboration with UNICEF, and commented “it’s an enormous responsibility and a very important role to involve both the clients and employees of the hotel in an initiative that will affect the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable children.” UNICEF’s Malaga representative Pedro Megías, explained the importance of companies such as the Kempinski Hotel Bahia joining the campaign “and increasing the consciousness, respect and protection of children’s rights in tourist destinations such as the Dominican Republic, allowing us to spread that message to many more people and help more and more people that need us.”
To date in Spain, 6 hotel groups, 34 independent hotels and 14 hotel federations and associations have pledged their support to this initiative.
It is estimated that 1.8 million children around the world are exploited by the sex industry. Of those children, around 70% are girls. For this reason UNICEF works to create protected areas for children, where they can be safe. This allows the children to be educated and informed that there are laws to punish those that exploit children, and inform the communities and families of the risks and how they can fight. In order to continue this important work, the charity needs support from public and private institutions and individuals.
About UNICEF
UNICEF is a leading humanitarian and development agency working globally for the rights of every child. Child rights begin with safe shelter, nutrition, protection from disaster and conflict and traverse the life cycle: pre-natal care for healthy births, clean water and sanitation, health care and education.
UNICEF has spent nearly 70 years working to improve the lives of children and their families. Working with and for children through adolescence and into adulthood requires a global presence whose goal is to produce results and monitor their effects. UNICEF also lobbies and partners with leaders, thinkers and policy makers to help all children realize their rights—especially the most disadvantaged.
