Concord’s annual March Mandolin Festival is celebrating its 15th year! This year’s festival presents two concerts with a lineup of virtuoso mandolinists, whose musicianship showcases the range and expressive qualities of the mandolin. The concerts will take place on Friday, March 3 at the Stone Church in Newmarket and on Saturday, March 4 at the Concord Community Music School in Concord.

CONCORD, N.H.—Concord’s annual March Mandolin Festival is celebrating its 15th year! This year’s festival presents two concerts with a lineup of virtuoso mandolinists, whose musicianship showcases the range and expressive qualities of the mandolin. The concerts will take place on Friday, March 3 at the Stone Church in Newmarket and on Saturday, March 4 at the Concord Community Music School in Concord.
These performances will feature Italian classical mandolinist Carlo Aonzo, multi-genre mandolin master Tim Connell, New England's own Steve Roy, and Concord Community Music School Folk Department chair and multi-instrumentalist David Surette, with special guest, folk singer and guitarist Susie Burke.

About the Artists
Carlo Aonzo, mandolinist, is a native of Savona, Italy where he began studying mandolin with his father. His playing has been recognized with awards at prestigious competitions including winning the “Vivaldi” prize of the 6th annual Vittorio Pitzianti National Mandolin Competition in Venice and first prize at the 27th annual Walnut Valley National Mandolin Contest in Winfield, Kansas. Carlo has toured throughout Europe, Italy, Japan, the USA, and Canada as a soloist and with chamber ensembles and orchestras (both professional and amateur). He has worked with many prestigious musical institutions including La Scala Philharmonic in Milan, Emilia-Romagna Symphony Orchestra, Savona Symphony Orchestra, Cannes Symphony Orchestra, Nashville Chamber Orchestra and as director of the Ligurian Plectrum Orchestra (Orchestra a Pizzico Ligure) who were called to play in the presence of Pope John Paul II. In 2006, Carlo conceived and founded the International Mandolin Academy (L'Accademia Internazionale del Mandolino), an association that promotes Italian classical mandolin culture. That same year he inaugurated the week-long workshop of the same name whose purpose is to promote the art of Italian classical mandolin playing, attracting the attention of international fans of the sector. The Academy takes place annually in Italy or Switzerland and participants come from all over the world to attend this event (USA, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Israel, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Hungary, Scotland, Switzerland, and Italy). Carlo’s recordings reflect his scholarship and passion to both champion the mandolin’s forgotten past and to develop its classical tradition into the future. His most recent recording is A Mandolin Journey with the Carlo Aonzo Trio.
A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and a virtuoso mandolinist with over twenty-five years of professional performing experience, Tim Connell has created a sophisticated and original global style on the mandolin. Regarded as one of the top North American interpreters of Brazilian choro on the mandolin, Tim has also developed his own unique voice for the instrument, described in a Mandolin Magazine cover story as “fiery and energetic, soulful and evocative.” Tim regularly tours Europe and North America in the international mandolin supergroup The Ger Mandolin Orchestra. He is a restless and prolific bandleader and arranger, sideman and studio musician, currently touring with his Brazilian choro duo Rio Con Brio, 1930’s-era swing quartet Stumptown Swing, world mandolin duo Mando Planet, and with guitar wizard Eric Skye. His most recent recording, June Apple, is a collection of classic fiddle tunes with guitarist Eric Skye. As a veteran teacher and workshop presenter, Tim has taught at the Alaska Folk Arts Camp and the Wintergrass Festival School among many other music camps. He is currently an an Adjunct Professor of Music at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR, and a frequent presence on the workshop and music camp scene.
Steve Roy is a multi-instrumentalist from the New Hampshire Seacoast who lives in southern Maine. Steve is an accomplished musician on many instruments and in many styles, and is best known as an in-demand player on mandolin and upright bass. He has performed and toured internationally with a myriad of bluegrass's top artists, including Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum, Darol Anger, Joy Kills Sorrow, Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen, Hit and Run Bluegrass, Chris Stuart and Backcountry, Spring Creek Bluegrass, The Brakemen, and many more. He also leads the exploratory jazz group Jazzputin and the Jug Skunks, and performs around with New England with a wide variety of bands, including Erica Brown and the Bluegrass Connection, The Stowaways, Grassputin, Steve and Dave Play Dead, High Range, Old Hat, and many others. He is a faculty member at 317 Main St. Community Music Center in Yarmouth, ME and at the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center in Portsmouth, NH, and has also been featured as an instructor at many of the top bluegrass and music camps in the US and Canada.
David Surette is highly regarded throughout New England and beyond for his work on the mandolin, guitar (both flatpick and fingerstyle), and bouzouki. Sing Out Magazine wrote that “Surette's playing is always inventive, and sets a new standard for traditional instrumentalists.” As part of a duo with his wife, singer Susie Burke, they have performed regularly together for 25 years, recording several albums and building a reputation as one of New England’s top folk duos. Surette was a founding member of the Airdance band with fiddler Rodney Miller, with whom he recorded four albums and toured nationally. He has also released five critically-acclaimed solo CDs. His most recent release, Waiting For The Sun, is a duo recording with Susie. He is also an experienced teacher, and coordinates folk music programming and teaches regularly at the Concord Community Music School, as well as at numerous summer music camps and festivals.
