New programme
(TRAVPR.COM) SCOTLAND - February 24th, 2017
For the last 7 years Unexplored Scotland has provided quality Winter Skills Courses in Scotland. The company has revamped the programme of its courses and offers now a 2 day winter course every weekend from early January till early April. No other company in the Scottish Highlands is as dedicated to teach as many people the necessary winter skills as Unexplored Scotland does.
For this winter the new programme includes a 1 hour session on route planning and avalanche awareness theory. The most important thing about avalanche awareness is how to plan a route in the hills by avoiding all the dodgy areas and how to detect areas with high risks.
More important, the company continues to only teach practical skills. When ice axe arresting most outdoor providers would only teach this without wearing a rucksack. However, at Unexplored Scotland it is believed that people wouldn't go without a bag in the hills in winter. After practising without the participants of a course have the chance wear a rucksack while ice axe arresting. The same goes with fitting crampons. There is no need to teach someone how to put on crampons on flat ground. This should be achievable by anyone. This outdoor provider will coach every team member on how to put on crampons on steep snow slabs and do that safely.
In addition Unexplored Scotland also teaches every course member how to kick steps, cut steps with an ice axe, walk with crampons, test the snow pack for stability and much more. In some cases when the conditions are good an emergency snow shelter can be built too.
When it comes to provided kit the company provides more than most private providers. Most companies will provide ice axe, crampons and helmets. Unexplored Scotland also provides mountaineering rucksacks which are large enough top fit everything inside that is needed for the course. We also offer people a hat to make the helmet fit well.
