(TRAVPR.COM) USA - October 2nd, 2017 - Portugal was named the Best Destination in Europe at the 2017 World Travel Awards. The recognition was awarded this weekend at a ceremony held in St. Petersburg, Russia, attended by Secretary of State for Tourism of Portugal, Ana Mendes Godinho.
This is the first time that Portugal has been voted the best European destination – highlighting the tremendous momentum that Portugal has attained in terms of quality, investment and media accolades (during 2017 Portugal received more than 2,300 awards and distinctions). The diversity of landscapes, growth of air accessibility, the ease of traveling within the country and the friendliness and welcome of the Portuguese peopleare all reasons Portugal took top honors.
This award is also the recognition of the commitment to make Portugal a destination of excellence, with a diversity of unique experiences for the visitor from north to south, from the coast to the interior.
Portugal also received the most awards overall, with 37 awards ranging from the best Cruise Port (Lisbon), the leading island destination (Madeira), the best beach destination in Europe (Algarve) and the best European official tourism entity (Turismo de Portugal).
Portugal took home 13 more “Oscars of Tourism” than last year, which highlights not only the brand of the 3rd most peaceful country in the world but also the 14th most competitive country in the world in terms of tourism that all years receives more than 21 million tourists.
