Another strong month for wages
Despite falling by 1.48 per cent, travel salaries stood at their second highest point ever in July 2018, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment which surveyed all new vacancies registered with the companies during the month.
With a figure of £27,600, wages for the average new travel job have dipped from June’s record figure but are still 5.91 per cent higher than last July, while the new rolling 12 month average, which gives a better idea of long-term trends, shows that salaries have increased by an average of 3.43 per cent over the course of the past year.
Similarly, standard travel salaries (those paying up to £40,000) fell from June’s record high, but dipped by just 1.28 per cent to £25,764 – the second highest figure ever seen in the index. Over the past 12 months, wages for new standard travel jobs have increased by an average of 6.36 per cent.
It was a particularly impressive month for new travel jobs in the north of the UK with a 2.45 per cent rise to £23,889 – their highest total since October 2012.
Vacancies rise, candidates fall
The number of new travel jobs being created rose by 13 per cent from June and by 10 per cent from July 2017, but in an indication of the summer sun’s impact on the recruitment market, the number of new candidates fell to a yearly low after a 16 per cent monthly fall.
Speaking about the stats, Barbara Kolosinska, Director at C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment, said: “Despite the small monthly dip, it was another excellent month for salaries with new travel job wages sitting at their second highest level after rising by an average of 3.43 per cent across the past 12 months.
“However, another fall in the number of new applicants looking for travel roles means it continues to be a candidate-driven market. The industry has suffered from a lack of quality candidates for some time now so this is not a new development, but it has become very apparent that companies and recruiters in the travel industry need to be smarter and more creative in how they generate talent.”
