C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment’s Travel Salary Index – January 2020

• Wages for standard travel jobs reach record high
• Overall wages fall in January but remain up 5 per cent over past year
• Best January for new travel job vacancies since 2017
• New candidate registrations rise 140 per cent

Standard salaries jump in January

The average salary for a standard travel job (those paying up to £40,000) rose by a huge 7.81 per cent last month to set a new record, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment which surveyed all new vacancies registered with the companies during the month.

January's figure of £26,337 is the highest salary recorded since the index began in 2012 and marks only the second time that the £26,000 barrier has been breached.

Overall, wages fell back by 2.73 per cent in the month to stand at £28,337 due to a lack of higher paid executive placements. However, January's total was still up by a healthy 4.92 per cent on the rolling 12-month average.

More vacancies, more candidates

There was a sharp increase in the number of new travel vacancies being made available last month, with January's figure more than doubling the figure seen in December. What's more, last month's total was also up compared to January 2019 and is the best January figure since 2017.

It was also a positive month in terms of new candidates, with January’s total up by more than 140 per cent from December, and only three per cent behind the number seen in the first month of last year.

Speaking about the stats, Barbara Kolosinska, Director at C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment, said: "There were lots of positives to take away from last month, with the most encouraging being the big rise in new vacancies. After a very mixed 2019, it's certainly encouraging to see the number of newly advertised travel jobs jumping to its highest January total for three years, and it's also great to see the increase in new candidates beginning their job hunt.

"For 2020 to be more successful than last year, we obviously need this to continue, and with wages for the typical job in travel jumping to a new high of £26,337, we will hopefully see lots of new candidates entering the market due to the attractive salaries on offer."
