Travel recruitment activity plummets

The travel recruitment sector has been decimated by the Covid-19 pandemic, with the number of new vacancies falling by 94 per cent between April and November 2020 compared to the same months in 2019, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment which surveyed all new travel jobs registered with the companies during the period.

Vacancy numbers have remained very low throughout the timeframe, with consistent falls year-on-year of at least 88 per cent each month since April. However, volumes have increased over the latest months, with the September to November period seeing twice the number of new roles than were created between April and June.

Despite the number of redundancies made within the industry this year, there has also been a large fall in the number of new candidates searching for roles. Overall, the volume of new job seekers has fallen by 53 per cent since April compared to the same timeframe last year, although there have been wide monthly fluctuations.

Candidate numbers fell by a large 75 per cent in April, 76 per cent in May and 62 per cent in June before recovering somewhat to dip a relatively light 11 per cent in July. However, this was followed by decreases of 35 per cent in August, 42 per cent in September, 65 per cent in October and 49 per cent in November.

Salaries remain steady

Despite the unprecedented global events this year that resulted in drastic drops for both vacancies and job seekers, salaries for new jobs in travel have remained remarkably steady.

The average new travel job came with a wage of £28,504 between April and November 2020, which was up by 0.19 per cent (or £53) from the same months in 2019. Standard travel jobs (those paying up to £40,000) fell by 2.78 per cent during the timeframe to an average of £24,368.

Speaking about the stats, Barbara Kolosinska, Director at

"Thankfully, things appear to be improving and there are many reasons to feel increasingly positive. As well as the vaccine being rolled out, we are seeing incredibly encouraging figures from the first two weeks of December, suggesting this may become C&M's busiest month since the pandemic began.

"A substantial recovery for travel recruitment will, of course, take some time, but it does look like we will be ending the year on a somewhat positive note."
