(TRAVPR.COM) UK - April 11th, 2013 - This week sees the opening of The Shed, the National Theatre's brand new temporary performance space located on London's Southbank. Designed by architects Haworth Tompkins, the distinctive red wooden box will celebrate new theatre and a mix of established and emerging artists. The venue's first production will be Table, a play written by Tanya Ronder and directed by Rufus Norris that encompasses six generations, nine performers, thirty characters and one very special piece of furniture.
The Southbank also plays host to two more events this weekend, the first being E4's Udderbelly festival. Taking place within a large upside cow, this festival will inject another summer's worth of laughter into London with four months of comedy, variety and colourful entertainment. Secondly at the Southbank, the Alchemy festival returns for its fourth year. Bringing a mix of dance, music, talks and debates to London, the festival explores the rich cultural connections between India, South Asia and the UK. London stages a world premiere this weekend with Salgado's Genesis at the Natural History Museum. The culmination of eight years' work exploring 32 countries, this exhibition unveils 250 extraordinary images of landscapes, wildlife and remote communities by the world-renowned Brazilian photographer. Further artwork can be admired at the Chelsea Art Fair, which returns with a long-overdue makeover and promises a younger, fresher feel while still retaining its usual high standards. And, following its inaugural year in 2012, Secret 7" is back with a display of 700 specially design record covers. Taking inspiration from RCA Secret, the event invites hundreds of artists, including Al WeiWei and David Shrigley, to design record sleeves for well-known songs. The pieces then go on sale on 20th April for £40, with buyers not knowing the artist or song until post sale.
Notting Hill premieres a new literary festival which invites writers to talk on everything from food to sport, fiction to spirituality, plus there's a child-friendly appearance from the creators of Rastamouse. While a further family-friendly event can be found at the London Transport Museum. We Love Steam! invites train enthusiasts to ride on a restored vintage steam train and miniature railway. Plus there will be film screenings, talks, family fun sessions and even a Lego version of the Baker Street underground station in 1863.
