Around 30,000 runners flood the street of London this April, reports LondonTown.com
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - April 15th, 2013 - One of the top five international marathons and the largest annual fund-raising event in the world, the London Marathon will see around 30,000 runners flood the streets of the capital this month. Serious competitors will mingle among charity fun-runners as the 26.2 mile route through central London comes alive to the sounds of bands, cheering crowds and pounding feet. Runners and supporters travelling from outside of London can conveniently book cheap hotels in London through LondonTown.com.
Among the elite runners will be Britain's double Olympic champion Mo Farah, who will only join the competitors for the first half of the race as part of his preparation for a full marathon debut in 2014. The serious competitors include Uganda's Stephen Kiprotich, the surprise winner of the London 2012 Olympic Marathon; Kenya's Abel Kirui, Olympic silver medallist and world champion; and Wilson Kipsang, Olympic bronze medallist. Britain's front runners are Derek Hawkins and Scott Overall, while David Weird and Shelly Woods also return to defend their London Marathon wheelchair titles.
As usual, a number of fun-runners are expected to take it one step further for their charity by sporting some humourous, and weighty, costumes for the occasion. Among the amateurs a number of celebrities will also be running - or walking - the challenging London course. These include McFly drummer Harry Judd, who has recently been diagnosed with a heart condition following his extensive training, Sian Williams, Amy Childs and eight members of Parliament.
The race takes in a number of London sites, kicking off at Greenwich Park and Blackheath with a loop around Charlton and Woolwich, it then passes the newly restored Cutty Sark – an ideal spectator view point – before continuing through Rotherhithe and Bermondsey, crossing the Thames on Tower Bridge and circling Canary Wharf and the City ahead of the showpiece finish along the Embankment, past Parliament Square and onto The Mall in the shadow of Buckingham Palace.
