PATRIOTIC CELEBRATIONS TAKE PLACE ACROSS LONDON FOR ST GEORGE'S DAY

England's dragon-slaying patron saint is remembered, reports LondonTown.com

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - April 15th, 2013 - Although St George's Day is always on 23rd April, in 2013 it falls on a Tuesday so the London celebrations will take place mainly on the prior weekend, with a few events on the day itself. Sadly, despite tireless campaigning to make St George's Day a national bank holiday, London events on the day will have to fit in with working hours.

The main London celebrations take place in Trafalgar Square on 20th April, with live bands and food stalls surrounding the area. This year's event has a theme of British food and will serve a number of free tastings, a banqueting area, live cookery demonstrations and food workshops.

Also following the theme of food, London's luxury department store Fortnum and Mason will host a suitably decadent feast on the evening of 23rd April. An evening of Englishness and a treat for the stomach and the senses, the event will commence with a toast to the dragon-slaying patron saint and Shakespeare, whose birthday falls on St George's Day. Diners will then be treated to asparagus, pea and mint soup, rib eye and Yorkshire pudding, rhubarb and elderflower fool, and plenty of wine.

Focusing on drink as opposed to food, The Lamb Tavern will be hosting their Toast to St George event. As well as decorating the pub with red, white and bunting, the London pub will provide a day of costumes, live bands and Morris dancing. Plus, there will be competitions with the chance to win free beer and a pop up bar serving real ales. Also embracing the red, white and blue theme will be Club De Fromage with their Best of British evening on 27th April. Along with the patriotic décor, the speakers will blast classic British tunes, including Robbie Williams, The Who, David Bowie, The Beatles and the Spice Girls.

With less cheese and more classical, the Royal Albert Hall will once again host the Gala for St George. Chris Hollins will present an evening of superb patriotic music, with popular English classics such as Rule, Britannia!, There'll Always be England and Land of Hope and Glory. More highbrow offerings will come from Adams (The Holy City), Walton (Crown Imperial), Handel (See The Conquering Hero Comes).

Honouring Shakespeare's birthday, the Globe Theatre will be offering a whole weekend of entertainment. The traditional Sonnet Walks will take place on the Saturday, beckoning visitors back into Tudor times and 16th century London, and Sunday will be a free Open Day that invites people to partake in games, magical mayhem and workshops.
