The capital embraces the coming of summer, reports LondonTown.com
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - May 2nd, 2013 - Making the most of every ray of sunshine to encase the capital, the May Bank Holiday weekend sees a number of outdoor events taking place across London. The distinctive waterway festival Canalway Cavalcade returns to Little Venice, which has been taking place since 1983. As well as an array of boats, trade shows and boaters, the festival also includes Morris dancing, competitions, food, family-friendly activities and a real ale bar. Visitors travelling from outside of London can embrace a weekend in the city sunshine with a number of cheap London hotels, conveniently bookable on LondonTown.com.
A further al fresco event will take place at Brockwell Lido. Surprisingly not swimming related, the Lido will welcome a number of retro furnishings to its premises for the Modern Movement Fair. Helping to add a number of stylish touches to London homes, the fair will sell a range of '50s, '60s, and '70s furnishings. With decorations of a different sort, the National Theatre's Propstore returns to London's South Bank this summer. Filling its rooms with authentic props from the National's productions, visitors will be able to relax at the bar and feast on street food while surrounded by items from This House, The Captain of Kopenick, the multi Olivier Award-winning The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and many more.
East London is a fusion of festivals across the weekend, each with something unique to offer. Taking place at a car park in Shoreditch, Street Fest is a day-long festival that unites graffiti artists, urban athletes and emerging music talent. While The Land of Kings in Dalston incorporates a heady mix of east London creativity with gigs, feasts, parties, games, speakeasies and a cinema. A completely unique and brand new festival, Spin London will take place at The Old Truman Brewery. The world's first urban focused bicycle consumer show and festival, it embraces the progressive cycling movement in London. Breakin' Convention, a festival dedicated solely to dance, will take place for three days at Sadler's Wells. The international event of hip hop and dance theatre celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with performances from the world's greatest poppers, lockers, B-boys and B-girls.
Tate Modern will play host to the first major solo exhibition of Ellen Gallagher's work. One of the most acclaimed contemporary artists to have emerged from North America since the mid-1990s, Gallagher boasts a 20-year career that has incorporated imagery from myth, nature, art and social history to create complex works in a wide variety of media. This exhibition will feature key pieces, including 'Bird in Hand 2006' and the film installation 'Murmur 2003-4'. A number of new works will also be shown to the public for the first time.
The London Cartoon Museum launches its Ralph Steadman at 77 retrospective this week. Famed for his long collaboration with the writer Hunter S. Thompson, Steadman is known for his illustrations in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He is also the man behind the Alice in Wonderland, Animal Farm and Treasure Island illustrations. This major exhibition will feature more than 100 original works, including his earliest published work in 1956.
If all that has left you thirsty, you might want to head to The Brewhouse at London Fields Brewery. Another brand new festival, London's Brewing celebrates the capital's thriving brewing scene with a weekend of fine beers from some of the capital's oldest breweries and the freshest microbreweries.
