Well-known stars make London’s theatre scene a vibrant one this month
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - May 20th, 2013 - The London stage plays host to a huge number of well-known stars in June. There’s still time to see Helen Mirren in The Audience before it closes on Saturday 15th June, while Felicity Kendal stars in Relatively Speaking which continues throughout June. Theatre goers who want to see headline grabbing shows like the critically acclaimed revival of Peter Nichols’s Passion Play, at the Duke of York’s Theatre, in which Zoe Wanamaker leads a strong cast can book a hotel in London and stay in the city overnight.
Brand new productions making their debut on the London stage in June include The Cripple of Inishmaan with a cast which includes Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, Sweet Bird of Youth at The Old Vic, in which Sex And The City’s Kim Cattrall plays a faded Hollywood star, and Fences which sees comedian Lenny Henry return to serious drama.
Othello, which “has all the hallmarks of Hytner at his best”, writes Charles Spencer in The Telegraph, continues at the National Theatre until 18th August with Rory Kinnear and Adrian Lester in the starring roles. At Shakespeare’s Globe The Taming of the Shrew and Macbeth both open in June, and there’s more from The Bard at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre which continues with The Winter’s Tale, reimagined for a younger audience. The outdoor theatre’s stage version of Pride and Prejudice also opens in June, in the year Jane Austen’s much-loved romantic comedy reaches its 200th anniversary.
Brian Cox, Ardal O’Hanlon and Dervla Kirwan star in a critically acclaimed version of Conor McPherson’s The Weir at the Donmar Warehouse, which comes to an end on Saturday 8th June. Also impressing the critics is Simon Russell Beale and John Simm who present a madcap revival of Harold Pinter’s The Hothouse, the second of Jamie Lloyd’s productions at the Trafalgar Studios as part of his Trafalgar Transformed season. Ends Saturday 3rd August 2013.
Playwrights take over the Royal Court Theatre in the Open Court Festival, and there’s more experimental theatre from Punchdrunk who present The Drowned Man at a secret location.
The best musicals this month include Merrily We Roll Along which has transferred from the Menier Chocolate Factory to the Harold Pinter Theatre in London's West End for a 12 week limited season. While The Book of Mormon transferred from Broadway to the West End and soon became a sell-out, The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Matilda recently reversed that cultural exchange and has replicated its success in London on Broadway. Another Roald Dahl story undergoing a musical makeover is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which under the directorship of Sam Mendes, is sure to be a sweet success and continues at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane throughout June.
