Westminster Abbey & Buckingham Palace mark sixty years since the Queen was crowned
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - May 30th, 2013 - In June 2013 two of London’s great historical buildings celebrate sixty years since Queen Elizabeth II was crowned with a series of special events including concerts and a service at Westminster Abbey, and an exhibition and Coronation Festival at Buckingham Palace. For those who want to come to London to mark the occasion, there’s a wide range of London hotels including accommodation to suit all budgets.
On Tuesday 4th June 2013 at 11.00am Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, and Members of the Royal Family will attend a service of celebration to be held at Westminster Abbey where Elizabeth II was crowned on 2nd June 1953. And on Thursday 13th June the Choir of Westminster Abbey performs a Gala Concert with organist and Master of the Choristers James O’Donnell conducting.
Other events planned by Westminster Abbey include a public lecture, exhibition and display of the Coronation Chair. On display in the Abbey's museum from Monday 6th May until Friday 27th September 2013, ‘60 Chairs for 60 Years’ is a collection of rare Coronation Chair miniatures made at the time of the 1953 coronation.
At the same time, a new photographic exhibition in partnership with Getty Images goes on display at the Chapter House where a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Australian-born London-based artist Ralph Heimans, bought by the Abbey, is displayed for the first time in London from Thursday 23rd May 2013.
The Coronation Festival, taking place over four days, from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th July 2013, in the Gardens of Buckingham Palace, will celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Queen's Coronation. The event, hosted by the Royal Warrant Holders Association, will bring together – for the first time on this scale – over 200 companies who hold Royal Warrants of Appointment.
On the evenings of Friday 12th and Saturday 13th July 2013 there will be an evening Gala in The Gardens of Buckingham Palace with UK artists including Katherine Jenkins, Russell Watson, Katie Melua, Laura Wright and pop rock band The Feeling set to perform. The National Youth Orchestra, English National Ballet and Grammy Award winning composer Eric Whitacre, plus a host of other artists are also part of the programme which celebrates the cultural life and era of change during the Queen’s 60-year reign.
For the annual Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace, from 27th July to 29th September 2013, a major exhibition brings together a spectacular array of dress, uniform and robes worn by the principal royal party for first time in 60 years, including the Queen's coronation outfit.
