American punk rockers play first major London show since singer's breakdown

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - May 30th, 2013 - One week after Muse wowed audiences at the Emirates Stadium, Green Day take to the stage at the home of Arsenal FC for their first London show since appearing at Wembley Stadium in 2010. With support from Kaiser Chiefs and All Time Low, Green Day's eagerly anticipated gig at Emirates Stadium on Saturday 1st June will also mark the American punk rockers' first UK appearance since singer and lead guitarist Billy Joe Armstrong's onstage breakdown in September 2012 and subsequent stint in rehab.

The five-time Grammy Award-winning band will perform songs from their recent triptych of albums - ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! - as well as classic tracks from their back catalogue, from their 1994 breakdown album Dookie right through to the aptly named 21st Century Breakdown. Joining Anderson, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool for this Saturday afternoon gig in front of a 60,000-capacity crowd will be long-time touring guitarist Jason White following his official induction as the fourth member of the band.

Travellers coming from outside London to watch this landmark gig by one of the world's biggest bands can find the right Hotel in London on the website LondonTown.com, where there is a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets - as well as the most comprehensive rundown of events and activities taking place across the capital throughout the year.

Last weekend, bombastic space rockers Muse treated fans at the Emirates Stadium with the kind of high-octane delights unseen in this part of north London since Dennis Bergkamp hung up his boots and Thierry Henry packed his bags for Barcelona. In perhaps the closest on-stage musical approximation to U2 in their Zoo TV pomp, the Devon three-piece were engulfed in pyrotechnics and flanked by a space station, a giant robot on wheels, a ginormous floating light bulb, trapeze artists, a steady flow of actors portraying demonic bankers and GCI images of Vladimir Putin, Angela Merkel and David Cameron dancing on a big screen.

But Green Day will not be too concerned about filling the majestic boots of Muse. Devoid of special effects and over-the-top oddities, a sober Armstrong et al will simply let their music do the talking - and won't even take on the grand ridiculousness of Muse. Renowned for their catchy riffs and sing-along choruses, Green Day in their heyday were accredited with reviving mainstream interest in punk rock - and after the follow-up success of Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997) and Warning (2000), the band won over a new generation with their rock opera, American Idiot (2004).

Armstrong suffered his own 21st Century Breakdown just days before the release of last year's ¡Uno!,- and fans will be happy to see him back on stage after treatment for alcoholism. At their return gig in March's South by Southwest festival in Texas, Green Day appeared to be back to their very best with a blistering set that included an impromptu medley of rock and pop hits, such as Guns N' Roses' Sweet Child O' Mine and AC/DC's Highway To Hell.

Green Day's comeback gig at the Emirates Stadium kick-starts a busy June of stadium rock in the capital, with Bruce Springsteen (15th June), The Killers and James (22nd June), and Robbie Williams (29th & 30th June) all performing at Wembley Stadium, and Rihanna taking to the stage at Twickenham Stadium on 15th & 16th June.
