Buckingham Palace hosts a special exhibition to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen's coronation
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - July 25th, 2013 - With the arrival of the royal baby boy this week everything else has been somewhat overshadowed. However, the royal celebrations continue in London on Saturday with the opening of Buckingham Palace's special month-long exhibition, The Queen's Coronation 1953. Marking sixty years since the Queen's coronation, the palace ballroom will host the event during its Summer Opening and will see the dress, robes and uniforms worn by the principal royal party brought together for the first time since 2nd June 1953. More personal items in the exhibition include the prince's invitation to Westminster Abbey and exquisite jewels worn by the Queen on Coronation Day including the Diamond Diadem, designed for George IV to wear at his coronation in 1821.
Saturday also marks the first anniversary of the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Games, which will be celebrated with the Open East Festival. Reopening the north section of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the weekend-long celebration includes live international music, the Real Food Festival and a Mini-Travelling Art Circus, presented by The House of Fairy Tales and featuring theatre, magic, music and games. The Art Car Boot Fair will also be in attendance, showcasing work by local artists; the Eco Design Fair will put on an arts and fashion market, showcasing some of London's best vintage and contemporary designs; and Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller presents his life-sized inflatable replica of Stonehenge.
A further reminder of last year's Olympic Games comes in the form of the Brixton Bolt, taking place this Sunday. Conceived last year after the London Games, the event returns to give locals the chance of being named the fastest man, woman or child in Brixton. With a number of 100m races through the middle of Brixton, there will be a wide range of prizes up for grabs.
Camden's seaside resort returns to the Roundhouse terrace this weekend, creating the perfect excuse for a staycation. The Camden Beach brings the seaside to London for the summer with 150 tonnes of sand, a Tiki Grill Hut & BBQ, margarita shack, deckchairs, ping-pong and more. Further celebrations of summer in London can be found at the Gabriel's Wharf Summer Party, two days of live music, tempting food and late openings; the Summer Streets Party on Regent's Street, the final in a series of Sunday parties; and The Miller's CiderDog Festival, a day of real ale, cider and perry, live blues, street food and ice lollies. Both a film and comedy festival takes place in the capital this weekend: the We Love the '90s Film Fest screens 'White Men Can't Jump' at the Portobello Pop Up Cinema on Saturday, while The Bedford Pub in Balham hosts a Free Fringe comedy festival with the likes of Phil Jupitus, Wil Hodgson, Chris Coltrane and Gerry Howell performig.
Families should visit Brockwell Park for Alice in the Walled Garden, a modern interpretation of Lewis Carroll's classic story, Alice in Wonderland. The promenade performance, which has been originally created for the Walled Garden, will give children the chance to experience Alice's madcap journey down the rabbit hole and meet all the familiar characters including the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and the Caterpillar.
