East and West are examined in play which takes Tiananmen Square as its starting point reports LondonTown.com
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - July 31st, 2013 - Lucy Kirkwood’s critically acclaimed play ‘Chimerica’ transfers to the West End this summer playing at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 6th August 2013 for a strictly limited 11 week run ending on 19th October 2013. Theatre goers who want to see the show can book a hotel in London and make a night of it by staying in the city overnight.
“If we see a better new play this year, we'll be extremely lucky,” wrote Michael Billington in The Guardian in reviewing ‘Chimerica’ in May 2013 when it premiered at the Almeida Theatre.
Members of the original cast will perform at the Harold Pinter Theatre including 35-year-old Stephen Campbell Moore who is best known for his performance as Tom Irwin, the young contract teacher in ‘The History Boys’ on both stage and screen. In ‘Chimerica’, he plays Joe, a fictional photojournalist who, in 1989, captured the iconic image of a protester and a tank in Tiananmen Square.
Claudie Blakley, who recently played Lady Macbeth at Sheffield Crucible, plays Tessa, while Benedict Wong who stars as Zhang Lin was recently seen playing the Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei in Hampstead Theatre’s production of #aiww: The Arrest of Ai Weiwei.
Chimerica is not the only West End transfer taking place in London this month. Simon Stephens’ new version of Henrik Ibsen’s ‘A Doll’s House’, directed by Carrie Cracknell, which premiered at the Young Vic in July 2012, where it was extended twice due to popular demand, now transfers from the Young Vic to Duke of York’s Theatre for a strictly limited 12 week run beginning on 8th August and continuing until 26th October 2013.
