Film director and local resident, Danny Boyle curates an 11-day film festival, reports LondonTown.com
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - August 7th, 2013 - Film director and local resident Danny Boyle has curated Shuffle, an eleven-day film festival which takes place both inside and outside St Clement's Hospital. With the original St Clement's Social Club used as a place where patients of the former Victorian psychiatric facility could engage in alternative forms of therapy, the Shuffle festival is a way of breathing new life into the area and "cleansing the building of its dark history", according to festival organiser Kate MacTiernan. As well as a number of Boyle's own films (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting and Shallow Grave), the festival will also screen the likes of Attack The Block, A Prophet and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
Two further festivals feature on the London events calendar this weekend, one being The Pit. Running for eight weeks this summer, the pop up boutique festival offers live acoustic performances, DJ sets, a Sunday farmers' market and a number of secret gigs. In Stratford meanwhile the relatively new Eat15 festival returns for another day of street food feasting. Exploring the culinary diversity on offer in the Borough of Newham, the festival treats Londoners to an eclectic range of cuisines.
Despite London being a hub for entertainment, it can prove difficult to keep children entertained during the school holidays. So, new for 2013, the Bounce festival provides a number of live performances and interactive activities. Running for the entire weekend, children will be able to partake in science experiments with BBC science presenter Greg Foot, test their limits on an assault course and enjoy performances from the Bounce Circus Spectacular and Da Bluez Street Dance Show. Also suitable for the children is Skate King's Cross, which offers a reminder of the days when King's Cross was a mecca for clubs and skating. During the day families can enjoy the eight-wheeled activity while in the evening the venue hosts roller disco parties, with food from Disco Bistro and boozy milkshakes.
Covent Garden hosts the inaugural London Beach Rugby this week. Raising money for the charity Restart, the event sees 32 teams and 320 competitors come together and compete in games of sandpit touch rugby. Spectators can enjoy the games for free as well as visit the Akuma Sports Stand and the Doom Bar Experience, where they can race on rowing machines and enjoy a refreshing beer.
Theatre wise, The Market Traders Car Park in Brixton stages the Synomatic Productions take on Shakespeare's Hamlet, which sees Brixton represent the title character and focus on the struggles that the area endured during the 1980s. A short distance away, at The Southwark Playhouse, Thom Southerland directs a scaled down chamber version of Maury Yeston and Peter stone's 1997 musical, Titanic. Focusing on real characters, the musical delves into the hopes and aspirations of the fated passengers aboard the RMS Titanic.
A further live performance can be enjoyed at the Conrad Shawcross Timepiece installation. The vast eight-metre faceless clock, suspended above the main Roundhouse space throughout August, uses the architecture of the iconic Camden building as its source of inspiration, responding to the 24 columns of the main space to mark the hours of the day. This Sunday, dancers from the Random Dance Company perform Azimuth, an interactive piece created by acclaimed choreographer Wayne McGregor, in the shadows of the installation.
