The populist classical season draws to a close

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - September 4th, 2013 - The world famous Last Night of the Proms will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on September 7th. This year's event is extra-special, as Marin Alsop becomes the first ever female conductor to take the podium on closing night.

The biggest season of classical music on the London calendar has been providing the usual combination of orchestral, solo and choral music all summer to audiences of every stripe. As usual, the Last Night of the Proms is offering five pound tickets on the door to concert-goers for whom most classical performances are too pricey.

Little wonder that esteemed conductor – and Proms mainstay - Jiri Belohlavek has described the event as ‘the world’s largest and most democratic music festival’. Nowhere is this egalitarian ethos captured more convincingly than on the Last Night, with its populist pieces and patriotic anthems, not to mention the widely-watched BBC coverage, broadcast all over the world for the vast majority of music fans who can't get their hands on tickets.

This year's line-up includes crowd favourites Nigel Kennedy and Joyce DiDonato, and the programme promises a marine-flavour with sea-faring themes from George Lloyd and Bantock, among others. As always, a rousing chorus of Rule Britannia will close the show, and Terry Wogan will helm the increasingly popular Proms in the Park party.

For those with a little more money and a little less time to queue for the £5 tickets, entry ranges from £27-£97. The show kicks off at around 7.30pm, running until nearly 11pm. Website LondonTown.com have announced a number of discounts on local hotels, all within walking distance of the Royal Albert Hall.

Among the cheap London hotels on offer, the Fifty Four Boutique Hotel on Queen’s Gate (less than ten minutes’ walk from the Albert Hall) is offering a 40% discount on double rooms. The offer – which brings the cost of a night’s stay down to £124 – is available exclusively through LondonTown.com.

The luxury Milestone Hotel London in Kensington Court is less than a ten minute walk from the Albert Hall, and is offering double rooms from £315, which is a 23% discount on the standard nightly rate.
